Mayo Grass Cycling Championships
The Mayo National School County Grass Track Champions Event and Fun Day! The event will be held on Wednesday, June 12th, starting at 10:30 AM at Gaeilscoil na Cruaiche, Westport.
We are thrilled to invite your school to the first of its kind Mayo National School County Grass Track Cycling Championships, taking place on Wednesday, June 12th, from 10:30 am at Gaelscoil na Cruaiche Westport County Mayo. This spectacular event is an opportunity for your school to showcase its athletic talents, who knows, maybe you have a cycling champion in your school?
Event Highlights:
- Venue: Racing will take place on our 200m oval grass track, specially prepared for both novice and experienced young cyclists.
- Time: The main championship races kick off at 10:30 am, with entries closing sharply at 11:00 am. Arrive early to secure your place!
- Coaching and Fun Activities: Post-race, participants can engage in skill building sessions, games, and an introduction to cyclocross led by top coaches from Connacht Cycling and Cycling Ireland. Expect a fun-filled novice race on a parallel, shorter track, ensuring everyone gets to ride and showcase their talents!
- Prizes: Our new champions will be awarded with medals and a Mayo County Champion Jersey
Entry Details:

- Cost: Completely free for schools and pupils (transportation to and from the event is at the expense of the school).
- Participant Information: Open to pupils in joint 3rd and 4th classes for our Junior competition and 5th and 6th classes for the Senior competition. Each school may enter up to six pupils per category.
- Equipment: A well-maintained bike and helmet are essential.
- Dress Code: Wear snug, weather-appropriate clothing. Don’t forget your sunscreen, packed lunch, and drinks.
Championship Information:
- Junior Event: 3rd and 4th class pupils will complete 5 laps.
- Senior Event: 5th and 6th class pupils will tackle 7 laps.
- Team Event: Gender-neutral team competitions alongside individual boy and girl categories.
- Note - please be aware that the students who are not competing in the Championship event are welcome to participate in our skills events that will run alongside our championship event so feel free to bring the class.
Post-Event Responsibilities: All participants are expected to spend a few minutes helping tidy the venue, showing our gratitude to the town council and Gaelscoil na Cruaiche for their generous provision.
Bike Security: Bikes may be dropped off from 7 am on the day and must be collected by 7 pm. Please note, adults collecting bikes will have their photographs taken as part of our security measures.
