Tús Maith: Transitions in Action – A Preschool to Primary School Project 2022-2023

Following on from the success of our pilot project, the Education Centre Directors in Mayo, Sligo, Donegal and Carrick-on-Shannon (covering Leitrim, Roscommon and Longford) in collaboration with the County Childcare Committee Managers in these counties are delighted to offer a collaborative project on Transition from Preschool to Primary School in the school year 2022-2023.

The overall aim of the initiative is to foster good relationships between the practitioners in both sectors to ensure that every child transitions successfully. As a result of taking part in the project, participants will

  • Gain an understanding of the curricula/framework/methodologies in both preschool and infant classes
  • Establish good relationships between their partner preschools/primary schools
  • Examine current challenges & opportunities in the transition space
  • Agree protocols for the sharing of information between both settings
  • Formulate a number of practical strategies to ease the transition process for all stakeholders

In order to participate, a partnership of at least one Junior Infant Teacher and one Early Years Educator from feeder schools is required. It is also essential that the Principal/Preschool Manager is aware and supportive of your involvement in this project.

Note: If your school/preschool already participated in the project during 2021-2022, there will be a year 2 project during 2022-2023 for that partnership, and you will be contacted about this in due course. However, if you have a new staff member who wishes to participate in the project this year, that staff member should form a partnership with a new primary school teacher and join the new (Year 1) cohort for the project.

The project will involve participating in a professional network that will meet approximately 5 times during the school year 2022-2023, after school hours with a mixture of online and face-to-face sessions. This will include a number of cross-sectoral CPD webinars on topics identified by the participants. Ongoing assistance and advice will be provided to make this a positive experience for all involved.

SAVE THE DATE: The first online meeting will take place via Zoom on Tues 25th Oct 7pm
