Students!! Get Creative and WIN A LAPTOP!! - National LawEd Essay Competition

We are delighted to announce that our National LawEd Essay Competition in partnership with DAC Beachcroft Solicitors Dublin, is taking place again this year and is now live!
After it's overwhelming success in 2021, we wanted to give young people another opportunity to express their creative writing skills in a fun and educational manner!
We are contacting you today to ask if you could relay this information onto your students, here is the essay writing criteria that contains all students will need to know about entering this competition:

We are calling out to all secondary school TY and 5th year students across Ireland, this is not something anyone wants to miss out on!
It is important that the voices of young people are heard. We came up with this essay title to enable students to research evidence to back up their argument, but also share their outlook on various issues under one title. So here it is!
Our essay title for 2022 is:
“Only the rich have access to the Courts in Ireland – discuss.”
We have a few rules to ensure a smooth operation for this competition. They are as follows:
  • We are asking TY and 5th year students ONLY to come up with an essay ranging from 800 to 1,000 words, discussing the title in question.
  • Any entries that have been published previously or any work that is not completed by the student themselves cannot be submitted and will not be accepted.
  • There is only one entry allowed per student, any further entries will not be valid.
  • A printed copy of the essay much be posted to LawEd, 5 Dunmore Park, Dunmore, Co. Kilkenny R95 CP92 AND an electronic copy emailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.If either the printed copy or electronic copy is absent from submission, the entry will be spoiled and we won’t be able to accept it.
  • We will supply an identification form for participants to fill out when handing up their essay entry. Apart from this, no identification should be found on either the printed or electronic copy of student’s essays.
The deadline for this competition falls on the 8th of April 2022 at 5:00pm. No entries can be accepted after this time.
To reward students for their efforts and hard work, it’s only fair that we include some prizes! We have something for first place, runner up and third place!
  1. First place receives a laptop and €100 One4All voucher
  2. Runner up receives a €75 One4All voucher
  3. Third place receives a €50 One4All voucher
To really boost their chances of securing these prizes, students should be aware of what the judges are looking for!
What we are looking for…
  • Risk taking! – We at LawEd love to look at things from different viewpoints. Students shouldn’t assume they are writing this essay to appeal to one specific mindset. Expand your audience, share your real opinion. This is what will separate one student apart from the rest.
  • Structure! – Students must understand structure is a key element to this essay competition. As judges, it is important we understand what you are getting across throughout your essay, therefore structure is beyond necessary!
  • Back it up! – all points of argument need to be backed up with research and support. This can come from articles, newspapers, books etc.
  • Grammar is key! – spelling and the way the essay reads in general is a huge factor we as judges need to consider. Poor grammar is not something we want to see!
  • Enjoy it! Most importantly, we want this to be an enjoyable experience for each and every student participating. We cannot stress enough how much we would appreciate every entry.
We advise reading through the essay writing criteria document on our website to be fully up to date with all that is expected of students for this competition, do not just rely on the information within this email.

The winner will be contacted on the 16th of May 2022.
We would really appreciate it if teachers, year heads, principals and guidance counsellors could share this information with their students in schools. Spread the word!
Thank you for your time.
All the best,
The LawEd Team.
