Planet Youth Parent Power Resources

Planet Youthis the implementation, in Mayo, Roscommon and Galway, of the Icelandic primary prevention model.  Every two years Planet Youth surveys all of the 15 and 16 year olds in our post primary schools to gather information about how our teenagers are doing.  This information is then used to develop positive preventative actions for the younger children coming behind them.  The project has distributed a Guidelines for Parents booklet to incoming 1styear parents since 2019 and this new Parent Power booklet is an extension of that part of the overall project.

6,000 of the 2022 Parent Power calendars and 20,000 of the Parent Power Guidelines for Parents of National School Children booklets have been printed.  Enough for distribution to all of the 18,000 junior infant, senior infant and first class parents across the region.  There are some images below.

The booklet and calendar contain some simple guidance and tips on the following areas:

  • Family Time
  • Sleep and Bedtimes
  • Screen Time
  • Hobbies and Sports
  • Making Changes at Home
  • Parents Working Together (Parent Power)

There is also a Parent Power process and template being developed, including web resources, that parents can use to come to agreements together on topics that will affect them and their children. Whilst it will be up to any interested parent groups to work that out for themselves, typically this would be things like:

  • Birthday parties
  • Screens
  • Communicating with each other
  • Mobile phones
  • Age-appropriate gaming
  • Bedtimes etc.

The project would be very happy to send you hard copies of the new booklet (And calendar if there are enough left.  The calendars will be sent out on a first-come, first-served basis) for yourjunior infant, senior infant and first-class parents.  There’s no obligation or follow up required by the school other than to distribute these resources home via the children.

If you would like copies of the booklets then could you just complete the table below and return it to Emmet Major, the Planet Youth Coordinator, atThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The booklets will be shipped to the school with DPD during the week of the 13thof December.
