Free education/information sessions on menstrual periods to both parents and teachers.
We are reaching out to see if we can be of assistance to the schools for the coming academic year. We have received request from primary schools to see if we could provide educational/information sessions on menstrual periods and wellbeing for parents of 4th, 5th and 6th class. Children are getting periods as young as 8 years old, and teachers have been reaching out to us because many of these kids appear ill-prepared both psychologically and physically for when this happens. Teachers themselves also welcome support on how to manage these sensitive issues when they arise throughout the school day and with kids with intellectual and physical challenges such as children with autism, Downs Syndrome etc. The subject of periods does not seem to have been addressed by parents at home in many instances, especially when periods unexpectantly happen to so many kids at a young age. Children are hearing about periods and managing pads etc for the first time through the school curriculum, which would be much more effective if delivered in partnership with both parents and teachers together.
Nixxworld is a Galway based company that designs and manufactures absorbent and leak-proof period underwear for children and teens. Our health promotion division is very involved and plays an important role in giving back to our community, and we do this by providing free education/information sessions on menstrual periods to both parents and teachers.
Nixxworld is providing two free parent information evenings nationally by zoom each week for the forthcoming academic year on menstrual periods and child/teen health.
Topics will cover: How to talk to your child and how to prepare your child - The physical management of periods such as sanitary choices and period pain management - How to make periods a positive experience for both the child and parent.
The statistics from Plan International, a children’s rights organisation who advances equality for girls, surveyed over 1100 Irish girls, aged 12-19 on period stigma and the results are quite staggering. Over 61% said they felt embarrassed by their period, 61% have missed school and a staggering 88% felt less able to pay attention during this time and much of this could be prevented by preparation for the first period as being prepared has been shown to impact how a child perceives their period going forward, be that positively or negatively.
