Support Groups.

Mayo Education Centre has facilitated many successful support groups for the teaching community through the years.

We are now seeking expressions of interest from teachers and principals of both primary and post primary schools who are interested in joining or forming a support group.  Support groups can be formed in many different areas, like for example:

  • Newly Qualified Teacher Support Group 13th Oct at 7pm
  • General Principals Support Group – Primary or Post Primary (currently running – register for this group in the courses section)
  • Small School Principals Support Group
  • SET support group (currently running – register for this group in the courses section)
  • Infant Teachers Support Group

Support groups loosely follow the following format.  One member co-ordinates the date and time of the next meeting.  There is no formal agenda.  An Informal agenda is formed in the first 5 minutes of each meeting, with participants suggesting items for discussion.  Each meeting has a variety of issues for discussion.  There are regular monthly meetings e.g. second Thursday of the month.  Meetings are held immediately after school or in the evening.  Small groups are preferable – normally 8 to 12 is ideal.  A high degree of confidentiality and discretion is practiced.  A regular social dimension develops as people get to know each other, and the frequent sharing of resources, ideas and strategies occur.  There are no minutes or reports and generally no external speakers, except by agreement.

If you would like to become involved in any of the above support groups, please complete this form.

NQT Support Group

Mayo Education Centre invites Newly Qualified Teachers (NQT’s) to join a newly formed support group. At our monthly meetings, we will facilitate members to provide each other with help, share strategies and stories, discuss experiences and feel more empowered in the classroom. This is not only an opportunity to belong to a supportive teaching community but also an opportunity to make teaching friends for life that will help to sustain you throughout your career.

You are welcome to join our first on-line support group meeting on;

Date: Wednesday 13th October

Time: 7pm

Book online: https://mayoeducationcentre.ie/cpd-courses/webinars/369-nqt-support-group.html

The support group will be facilitated by Dr Máire McNally and Dr Kathleen Smyth.

Mayo MFL Communities of Practice (CoP)

MFL CoP are open to all language teachers, language assistants and PMEs. They are a forum for sharing ideas or asking questions and an opportunity to interact and network regularly. To understand how CoPs work, watch the short video on this page https://ppli.ie/community-of-practice/

The first CoP of the year will start with an update from PPLI on language resources and upcoming projects for the year. This update will be followed by a short CoP where participants can discuss topics of their choice and collectively plan for the year ahead. We love to share ideas so, for those on Twitter, be sure to use #PPLI_CoP. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Date: Thursday 14th October 2021
Time: 7.30pm to 9pm
Facilitator: Pearl Heneghan

If you would like to convene a small group of like-minded teachers or principals, for the purposes of initiating or developing an educationally relevant project over a period of time, then a TPC may well be the vehicle through which you could do this. The TPC can provide a framework including funding to cover the costs associated with this type of initiative.  For more information, contact This email address is being protected from spambots. The Centre for School Leadership provides many supports for primary and post primary principals, both experienced and newly appointed.  Experienced principals can avail of coaching sessions, which may lead on to coaching for the whole school staff. Newly appointed teachers can avail of a mentoring service.  For details on these and other supports available to you, click here.
