Supporting Behaviour for Learning

This course is designed to equip teachers with knowledge and understanding of behaviour and to help develop positive behaviour supports in their classroom and school.


· To support teachers in understanding all the factors (Biological, psychological and social) influencing behaviour

· To identify the characteristics of special educational needs (SEN) as they relate to behaviour.

· To look at changes we can make to the systems we have in place (Emotional, physical and learning environment) to prevent behaviours that impact learning

· To develop whole class and whole school strategies to promote positive behaviour in the classroom and on the yard

· To look at the skills pupils need to develop in order to engage in behaviours for learning

· Provide teachers with strategies to teach social skills and emotional regulation at junior and senior class level

· To use the 6 step process to plan for supporting behaviour through examination of the Continuum of Support Plans and Additional Care Needs Plans

· To support teachers in developing skills to look after their own wellbeing

Eimear Coffey is a primary school teacher with a variety of experience working as a Mainstream Class Teacher, SET and Special Class Teacher. She has a graduate Diploma and a Masters of Education in the area of Special Education. She is currently on secondment with the National Council for Special Education, working as a member of the Primary Behaviour and Wellbeing Team.
